Hair color change?

Can hair color change over night? I'm betting w/ my husband about this. He claims you can go grey(white) over night due to a scare or a calamitous event in your life. He and others in his family swear this happened to his Aunt after the death of her husband. Not just the roots, but the existing hair. I say this is impossible. Especially the existing hair. Please no superstitious, religious based answers or hearsay, I need physical, scientific proof, and if possible where I can find this proof.

The color of hair may appear to change relatively quickly. Certainly a hair shaft can not change color which must start at the root and grow out. Usually hair goes through a repeated cycle of growth, rest (in the follicle), loss, and regrowth. If something (grief?) causes a person to lose hair more rapidly (even pulling on hair?) there may be more gray than before in the mix as resting colored hair is lost. Possibly no one paid close attention to the person in grief until their loss of a loved one. On closer inspection they may seem grayer than when last visited. Has the person noticed a sudden change?

I forgot to mention that some people wear colored hair pieces (to cover gray hair?) but may neglect to use them when in profound grief. Your comment re' miraculous hair growth reminded me. Report It

Women spend sooo much time trying to change their hair color.. what a waste.. according to your husband, just a good scare could do it... lol
